The Ultimate Guide to Lawn Care in Toronto: Month-by-Month Schedule

Toronto’s climate creates unique challenges and opportunities for lawn care. The growing season is relatively short but intense, and proper timing makes the difference between a patchy yard and a lush, green lawn.

April: Spring Cleanup

Once the snow melts, start with a thorough cleanup. Rake out dead grass, thatch, and winter debris. Check for snow mould and rake vigorously. Professional lawn care services typically begin with a spring assessment.

May: First Mow and Feeding

Start mowing when grass reaches 3 inches. Cut no more than one-third of the blade height. Apply slow-release fertilizer once soil reaches 10°C consistently. According to the University of Guelph Turfgrass Institute, spring feeding is critical for strong root systems.

June: Peak Growth

Maintain consistent weekly mowing with sharp blades. Water deeply once or twice per week rather than daily. Precision edging along walkways keeps everything looking manicured.

July and August: Summer Stress

Raise mowing height to shade the soil. Water early morning to minimize evaporation. If your lawn goes dormant during heat waves, it will likely recover when temperatures cool. Avoid heavy fertilizing during peak heat.

September: Fall Recovery

The single most important month for Toronto lawn care. Warm soil and cool air create ideal growing conditions. Core aeration, overseeding, and fall fertilizer pay dividends the following spring. Leaf removal should begin as trees start dropping.

October and November: Final Prep

Continue mowing until growth stops, gradually lowering blade height. Remove all fallen leaves. Apply winterizer fertilizer in late October. Clean eavestroughs one final time after the last leaves fall.

December through March: Dormancy

Your lawn is dormant but needs protection. Avoid walking on frozen grass. Keep heavy snow piles off the lawn. Plan spring landscaping projects during this time.
