Gutter guards are covers or screens installed over your eavestroughs to keep leaves and debris out while letting water through. The pitch is appealing: install them once and never clean your gutters again. The reality in the GTA is more nuanced, and it depends heavily on the trees around your home.
Mesh and micro-mesh guards are the most effective at blocking fine debris but cost more. Screen guards are affordable and easy to install but let small debris through. Reverse-curve guards direct water down while leaves fall off, but can struggle in heavy rain. Foam and brush inserts are the cheapest but tend to trap debris inside.
Quality guards genuinely reduce large-leaf buildup, cut down cleaning frequency, help keep pests from nesting, and lower ice-dam risk by keeping the channel clearer. For a two-storey GTA home where climbing a ladder is a real safety concern, that reduction in frequency has real value.
Guards don't eliminate maintenance. Fine debris like maple keys, pine needles, shingle grit, and pollen still gets through or piles up on top. In freeze-thaw conditions, ice can form on and under the guards. And cheap guards can make things worse by trapping debris where it's hard to reach. They reduce cleaning; they don't end it.
For homes under heavy tree cover, or with hard-to-reach two and three-storey gutters, good micro-mesh guards are often worth it. For a bungalow with few trees, regular professional cleaning twice a year is usually more cost-effective. Either way, plan on an annual inspection. We're happy to assess your property and give an honest recommendation before you spend on guards.
